Announcing The Stage to Screen Blogathon

The Rosebud Cinema and I are co-hosting
The Stage to Screen Blogathon
which will take place from
October 17 – 19, 2014!

Screen adaptions of stage plays are always interesting to watch, as the skills needed to create a piece of theatre differ so greatly from that of films. Many people are – understandably – skeptical when watching a stage piece adapted to films, but it is undeniable that they are still popular in today’s film industry. Needless to say, there have been countless films based on plays which have been… well, terribly mediocre, but there, too, have been an incredible amount of surprisingly successful adaptions.

That is why Rosie and I have organised a blogathon centered around that exactly! No matter what your topic is, as long as it is a film adapted from an original stage play or musical, you can write about it! Here you can find lists of films based on plays. For more ideas, you can have a look at lists of films based on the works of William ShakespeareTennessee WilliamsNoël CowardLillian HellmanEugene O’Neill. And some other suggestions…

A huge thank you to Rosie for typing up this wonderful announcement. Participating in and hosting this blogathon is a brand new form of blogging experience and I am very excited to see our blogathon grow and develop over the next few months. Check back for updates on the participants and their various topics!

  1. It is an interesting idea, I can’t deny that. I can think of one or two options for theater-based movies from my own collection, but the only trouble is that I’m already signed on to discuss a large number of films for other blogathons (for one thing I have to watch a gigantic pile of David Cronenberg films for Speakeasy and Lawrence of Arabia for Movies Silently) so it’s mostly an issue of scheduling.

If it is of any interest, however, I do have a blogathon of my own going on. Perhaps you’d like to take a look and let me know what you think:

    1. Thanks for your interest John. Don’t let yourself get weighed down with too many blogathons! Stage to Screen is always available for you if you’re looking for extra pieces to work on. Good luck with your own blogathon!

  2. Looking forward to this blogathon – what a great idea! I left a note on Rosie’s blog that I’d like to do “The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse” (1938).

    Also, the banners are STUNNING.

    1. Thank you! Full credit to Rosie for the lovely banners. They are looking fabulous on display on participants blogs!
I can’t wait to get this blogathon started. The line up so far is wonderful.

  3. Reblogged this on Part Time Monster and commented:
Because this is so fun that you need to know about it and join in! The Stage-to-Screen blogathon, coming this October, sponsored by The Rosebud Cinema and Rachel’s Theatre Reviews.

    1. Thank you so much for your support Diana! The Stage to Screen blogathon is shaping up well and promises to be an exciting weekend of fascinating posts. Thanks again!

      1. You’re welcome! It does indeed look like it’s going to be a really good week of posts—very much looking forward to it!

  4. Oooh! Ooh! I’ll take the musicals on! Guess I’ll work with ones I HAVE seen on the stage… so – Rent, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis. Two of these will tie nicely into some of my writing about books too. 🙂

    1. Hooray for some more musicals chat! Les Mis has already been snapped up by another participant but we can sign Rent, Evita and Phantom of the Opera over to you if you’d like to work with all three of those. Let us know & thanks for your interest!

      1. I’ll take them 🙂
Will be visiting Les Mis for other posts anyhow (reading it for Classics Club, though that post will take a while before it’s ready). 🙂

      2. Should be fun 🙂 And what a good excuse to watch them all again.
Would love to also do Into The Woods but… I suppose I could use the PBS video to represent the stage version — but the movie version wont be out yet before this hop. Looking forward to this! (yeah.. I’m a bit of a musicals geek…)

      3. I’m in favour of a musical films binge over the weekend! Into the Woods is always a possibility, you could even base your post on what you hope will be incorporated into the film. Mystic musings on a film just out of our grasp?

      4. We’ll be updating the participants table later today so you can let us know if you want to include Woods or stick to the three already agreed on. Lots of fun work lined up for you!

      5. I’ll go ahead and do some Into The Woods “hopes and fears” posting too — will allow me to then do a followup after it comes out (Not that I needed the assurance that I would get to see it when it comes out but… that will give an additional assurance!)

  5. Dear Rachel,

Could I do Journey’s End (1930, directed by James Whale from the stage play). I love that movie and would love to introduce it to anyone who doesn’t know about it.

    Take care,

    Janet

  6. Great idea! I’d like to see how you are going to show all of these posts in a two day period! 😉
Can I join you? I’d be happy to write about ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ — I don’t think anyone has claimed that one? 🙂

      1. Ugh! I regret I must rescind my contribution of Raisin in the Sun. Something’s come up and I will be away. I will look forward to all the posts and best of luck with the blogathon!

  7. Hi, I’d love to get involved doing some kind of big blog post about the different things I have seen both on Screen and on Stage if that’s ok?

  8. If it is not too late to join could you put us down for The Grass is Greener ( 1960 ) for either Saturday or Sunday? I would just love to include HARVEY too, but shucks, we just don’t have the time. Our blog is Silver Scenes : silverscenesblog.blogspot.com. Thanks!
